Anual Report 2022-23
In 2050, urban mobility may look very different, especially in Africa, where the outlook on sustainable transportation is more optimistic than in Europe. EURIST has been working to promote CO₂-free electric mobility on the continent, focusing on two-wheelers and urban cable cars. Africa, a rapidly growing transportation market, has a unique opportunity to leapfrog fossil-fuel dependency and reduce reliance on oil. Instead of expensive electric cars, affordable two- and three-wheelers led by local startups could offer cleaner, more inclusive transportation solutions with lower investment needs.
The AFRICAN E-BIKE Support Group
The AFRICAN E-BIKE Support Group promotes sustainable mobility in Africa by advancing the adoption of solar-powered e-bikes. With transport responsible for 25% of global CO₂ emissions, e-bikes provide an eco-friendly alternative, especially as Africa’s car numbers could double by 2050. The group supports local actors with knowledge sharing, technical collaboration, and funding. Key projects focus on the health sector, empowering women through mobility, and supporting small farmers, SMEs, freight and passenger transport. The goal is to foster a lasting cycling culture and infrastructure in African countries.
Project Summary: E-Bikes for Africa – 10 SDGs with One Bike
The „E-Bikes for Africa“ project aims to address mobility challenges in Africa while supporting the sustainable development goals (SDGs). In collaboration with international partners, the project focuses on developing affordable, solar-powered e-bikes as an alternative to motorcycle taxis, ambulances, and general transportation. This initiative seeks to improve mobility, create economic opportunities, enhance access to healthcare, and contribute to climate protection in Africa. The project is implemented by partners such as HNF, HERO Cycles, FABIO, and SUNCYCLES, with funding from KfW/DEG and HERO Cycles Ltd.
The develoPPP program
„What I find most beautiful about it is that it can help make life easier for people in Africa.“
The develoPPP program
The Hamburg-based organization EURIST, the African NGO First African Bicycle Information Organisation (FABIO), and the bicycle manufacturer Hero Cycles Ltd. are driving the mobility transition in Africa. Since 2020, the project has been co-financed by DEG, a subsidiary of KfW. It is being made possible through the develoPPP.de program, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development.
