EURIST is initiating projects in the field of sustainable transport. Steps from project idea to “cutting the red tape” are generally based on a comprehensive stakeholder involvement throughout the project’s phases – and the definition of the project’s purpose, primary and secondary goals, timeframe and timeline of when goals are expected to be met.
The project Initiation phase is also used to determine the project’s viability prior to committing the required staff, materials, and finances to the project.
EURIST has initiated projects in the field of road safety, non-motorised transport, public transport transport, awareness raising, knockledge ecxchange and data collection – both in rural and urban environment and with a focus on sub-saharan Africa.

Urban Ropeway Kampala Consolidation Activities
The Kampala Cable Car project is a continuing project which is still in formative stages that require constant eye on considering the retardation it has suffered in the past years.
Although the feasibility study was carried out and the mandate to have it reviewed with an aim of making it bankable, social, economic and technically appropriate secured by EURIST, it is very important to keep engaging the different power that be to ensure that is remains among the public transport priorities.
As EURIST mobilizes the required resources for this work some short term interventions had already been initiated that need finalization and also to prepare the ground ready for the review.
The mission in January 2017 was successful in a sense that all stakeholders in Kampala are unified again and motivated to bring the project forward. EURIST has now become official partner of KCCA for the Cable Car Project. With the mandate to review the current feasibility study, adding some components (including further corridors) it is now time to identify potential investors for a PPP model.
During the pursuit for the mandate, a number of stakeholders and offices have to be approached and meetings scheduled for them to understand the project and the status quo.
The Key objective of the work ahead is to overcome project barriers and positively influence all relevant stakeholders on different levels and in different positions through information, awareness raising and delivery of knowledge and facts on the cable car project’s through presentations and discussions with key actors and decision makers in Kampala.

Ropeway Workshop Izmir
The cooperation between EURIST and the city of Izmir resulted in a request from the town councilors to present the ropeway theme in a workshop – and, if necessary, to integrate it into the city’s future transport planning as an urban means of transport.
In addition to a general introduction to Sustainable Urban Mobility, EURIST used a brief study to analyze key issues and the current situation of the city’s transport sector with key transport stakeholders and explained the potential of urban cable cars.
In addition, potential corridors for pilot projects were discussed in group work phases.
Participants of the workshop were composed of important stakeholders in the transport sector of the city which were invited in cooperation between EURIST and the city of Izmir. The aim of the event was to make this group of participants a task force that develops and pursues more concrete steps regarding a feasibility study and other activities.

The Academy of Sustainable Urban Mobility (AoSUM), which was jointly organized by UN-HABITAT and DOPPELMAYR, resulted among other things to contacts within The City Council of Gaborone / Botswana. Doppelmayr was invited to attend a congress on the 8 and 9 of November. EURIST prepared and moderated one of the workshop in the congress.

Accra Workshop on Urban Planning and Sustainable Mobility
In collaboration with GHABA (Ghana Austrian Business Association), EURIST hosted a workshop in Accra, Ghana. EURIST was responsible for the strategic and political Part of the workshop as well as for questions of urban planning and sustainable mobility in general.
EURIST highlighted the key challenges in the African transport sector and the way local and national decision makers as well as financing bodies tend to find answers and solutions to the ever growing vehicle fleet, increasing numbers of accidents, decreasing livability of cities as well as problems in traffic flow management and economy-affecting congestion. It was pointed out that a mere focus on investing in road infrastructure like ringroads, highways or flyovers will not solve any problems as they miss an integrated approach to efficient and low cost urban transport in Africa.
Ropeways were discussed asan example for a transport mode which is able to tackle such problems and that fits perfectly into the African conditions. In a work-Session with all the participants of the workshop, potential corridors in Accra where proposed and discussed.

2016-2017 continuation in Accra
In March on a trip to Accra with the local partners, the internal work structure of the project was changed in accordance with the local partners, and the ropeway project was introduced to parts of the new government.
Since March the new work structure has been in place and working. The local- partners have continued to hold talks with investors and government members, however, the project has not noticeably progressed.
A meeting with the Ghana ambassador will possibly be scheduled for September or October in Germany, in order to introduce her to the project
Ropeway Workshop Morocco
In February, EURIST participated on a delegation trip organised by the EMA (Euro-Mediterran Arab Associated) to Morocco. The journey was made with the former German Federal President and president of the EMA, Christian Wulff who welcomed the suggestion to include EURIST in this regard better into the work of EMA. For this, a proposal shall be developed from which further ropeway projects could evolve in EMA countries.
Several cities in Morocco seem to have a good potential for ropeways Morocco sees itself as an inno-vative country, motivated to take a leadership role for North Africa and become a good example for economic development.
Still, the aspects of sustainable development are not yet fully integrated in the economic policy goals represented especially in the transport sector and city planning.
Urban ropeways provide a possibility to bring the aspect of sustainable transport and integrated urban development back on the agenda. Since in Tanger a ropeways project is already in planning, Rabat and Casablanca are particularly eligible for pilot cities.
Urban Public Transport Workshops in Africa
EURIST started the year with a number of workshops on public transport improvements in several African cities. The workshops were targeted to identify options for urban ropeway systems to close missing links in current public transport or as feeders to existing or planned Mass Rapid Transit Systems like BRT or Light Rail Systems, which are soon to be opened in Algier, Addis Ababa and Dar Es Salaam.
Workshops were held in Kampala, Harare, Lusaka, Dar Es Salaam, Abijan and Addis Ababa.
Ropeways in Europe
While the city of Hamburg has declined plans for a ropeway to link the city with the southern part of the river Elbe, other cities are seriously considering applications in their local context (among there Brussels, Istanbul, some Scandinavian cities).
Together with its Swedish Partner KOUCKY (Goeteborg) EURIST organized an Initial Workshop on the Potential of Cable Cars in Scandinavian cities.
Representatives from Stockholm, Oslo and Goeteborg discussed urban applications in their coastal cities to develop their public transport systems further. Goeteborg is currently proceeding with a feasibility study to connect the CBD with a waterfront development project.
