This international conference on Urban Transport and the Environment has successfully been reconvened annually for the last seventeen years. It has always attracted a wide international spread of delegates and is well established as the premier annual event of its type. It first started in Southampton in 1995; continuing in Barcelona (1996); Acquasparta, Italy (1997); Lisbon (1998); Rhodes (1999); Cambridge, UK (2000); Lemnos, Greece (2001); Seville (2002); Crete (2003); Dresden (2004); the Algarve (2005); WIT campus in the New Forest (2006); Coimbra (2007); Malta (2008); Bologna (2009); Cyprus (2010) and Pisa (2011).

The continuing requirement for better urban transport systems in general and the need for a healthier environment has led to an increased level of research around the world. This is reflected in the proceedings of this well-established meeting which demonstrates the steady growth of research into urban transport systems. The variety of topics covered by the conference are of primary importance for analysing the complex interactions of the urban transport environment and for establishing action strategies for transport and traffic problems.

THE PEP Workshop in Moscow

7 - 8 June, 2012 in Moscow

Posted on 3rd May, 2012

MAKING THE LINK - TRANSPORT CHOICES FOR OUR HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT AND PROSPERITY

Travel and transport are essential parts of modern life. We depend on transport to travel to work, for shopping and leisure, by car, by bus, by train, by walking and cycling. Human powered mobility can also contribute to our health and well-being through physical activity.

But transport also has harmful effects on the environment and on our health – through congestion, accidents, pollution and greenhouse gas emissions.

More than ever, we need to be aware of the crucial connection between transport, health and the environment.  THE PEP – the Transport, Health and Environment Pan-European Programme – makes the link.

ECOMM Frankfurt 2012 - European Conference on Mobility Management

12 - 15 June, 2012 in Frankfurt

Posted on 4th May, 2012

Actively supported by the municipality of Frankfurt, traffiQ organises from the 12th -15th of June the 16th edition of the European Conference on Mobility Management (ECOMM) The Congress will take place in the Messe Forum Congress Venue Frankfurt. Workshops, plenary sessions and technical visits will be organised along all conference days. The ECOMM 2012 will offer the opportunity for participants to benefit from a high level of exchanges on the latest developments in Mobility Management in Europe. Mobility management: Mobility Management (MM) is a concept to promote sustainable transport and manage the demand for car use by changing travellers′ attitudes and behaviour. At the core of Mobility Management are ”soft“ measures like information and communication, organising services and coordinating activities of different partners. ”soft“ measures most often enhance the effectiveness of ”hard“ measures within urban transport (e.g., new tram lines, new roads and new bike lanes). Mobility Management measures (in comparison to ”hard“ measures) do not necessarily require large financial investments and may have a high benefit-cost ratio.

2nd Congress and Exhibition of African Public Transport

7 -11 October, 2012 in Johannesburg, South Africa

Posted on 3rd May, 2012

BRT, a sustainable solution for mobility in Africa and the developing world

The African cities face important mobility issues. The explosion of the urban population, the densification of the car traffic and the lack of adequate transport infrastructures are common characteristics of these metropolises.

In these cities, because of the traffic congestion, the displacements of the people become slower and difficult in front of a greater need of mobility. The access to public transport services at a lower cost has become difficult even impossible. In some cities, more than 80% of the trips are assured by traditional means of transport and private cars, sources of pollution and noises.

Today, to ensure a sustainable development of cities and a better accessibility to the activities and urban opportunities to all city-dwellers, it is necessary to limit the use of private cars and to set up effective and attractive systems of mass public transport. This implies coordinated actions between urban planning and transport taking to account the issue of transport modal choice and the required investment. This is the reason why UATP chose for this 2nd Congress, the following main topic: "BRT, a sustainable solution for mobility in Africa and the developing world."

For those involved in transport planning, research and practice, 2012 will prove to be yet another challenge to their skills. Transport plays a key role in regeneration and there will be particular pressure to produce innovative and cost-effective solutions to congestion, safety and travel behaviour change at a time of major budget constraint. ETC 2012 will focus on the needs of all those who are attempting to come up with practical answers based on experience throughout Europe.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2012, the Conference is unique in Europe, attracting around 400 transport practitioners and researchers to an event where they can find in-depth presentations on policy issues, best practice and research findings across a broad spectrum of transport modes.

The Association for European Transport

The Association for European Transport has been responsible for the organisation of the Conference, which has been held annually since 1973. IENE 2012 International Conference

21 – 24 October, 2012 in Potsdam-Berlin, Germany

Posted on 3rd May, 2012

IENE 2012 conference theme

“Safeguarding ecological functions across transport infrastructure”

European landscapes are among the most fragmented areas in the world. Natural habitats have been lost, transformed and isolated over many centuries, but the pace and extent of landscape change that we face today is unprecedented. Fragmentation caused by expanding transport infrastructure and urban sprawl is a major cause for the loss of biodiversity, and many of its detrimental effects may still take time to manifest fully.

There is an urgent need for improvement in infrastructure and urban planning, but there is also hope thanks to recent endeavours in European environmental policy and a growing recognition of landscape and biodiversity values in the world. Defragmentation approaches and first steps towards integrative habitat networks have already been implemented in many countries and at EU level, and a concept of green infrastructure is being developed upon which much of the European natural heritage will depend. Where transport and green infrastructures meet, provisions must be made for securing ecological functions while maintaining traffic safety and efficacy.

IENE invites decision makers, scientists and engineers, practitioners and stakeholders to discuss and develop solutions that help us to safeguard biodiversity and achieve an ecologically sustainable infrastructure.

CODATU 2012 "The role of urban mobility in (re)shaping cities"

Posted on 18th January, 2012

In countries of the Global South, policies advanced at local and national level are often aimed at promoting mobility in the interest of development. But they may also go against global considerations, especially climate change. Furthermore, the rapid growth of cities and towns in the South creates numerous short-term difficulties, the solutions to which have a long-term impact on sustainable urban development. By confronting theory with practice, the conference will identify the policies and measures that can offer solutions for local, national and global levels of application.

The Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development that will be held in June 2012 should confirm the commitments of states to sustainable development. The CODATU XV Conference will echo this by dealing with the contribution of transport and mobility to green growth and better governance of sustainable development.

In addition, the conference aims to present analyses from cities and towns in Africa. Ten years after the CODATU X conference in Lomé (Togo) entitled "Urban mobility for all", participants will be invited to present the advances made and the challenges that have emerged since then, and the outlook for the next decade.

Cooperation for urban mobility in the developing world (CODATU) was created in 1980 following a seminal international conference on urban transport in Dakar, Senegal.

CODATU is an international non-profitmaking organization whose aim is to promote international exchanges between the various players in the transport and urban mobility sector: public authorities, companies, and urban transport research institutes and professionals.

The CODATU conferences are therefore intended to promote scientific studies and share concrete experiences that help to implement sustainable urban mobility in cities and towns in developing countries.

Addis Ababa is a fast growing city. The total population is approximately 3.2 million inhabitants and the rate of increase approximately 3.1%. On this basis, it the total population may double in just over two decades. The City Development Plan 2001 – 2010 had forwarded a number of solutions to address the numerous challenges facing Addis Ababa Municipality.

Now the revision of the Master Plan is in progress and two mass transit projects are under studies: a BRT line which will be operated by Anbessa City Bus Enterprise, one of the largest public transport companies in Africa and a LRT system of more than 40 km.
